Are you ready for bargaining? “Bargaining with Verizon East Coast is at a stand still”, reported Director F.A. RaPue of CWA Local 9400. “Verizon California has offered an Enhanced Separation Program for all OSP titles, along with some service reps and service writer members”, added Director Ra Pue. Information for CWA Local 9400 Verizon members is being distributed by Assistant Chief Steward Mike Moore, Area Steward Angelo Tota and Steward Bruce Stevens. CWA Local 9400 knows that it is important to keep the membership informed about bargaining issues and the positions companies take because in 2010 it will be our turn in the bargaining “hot seat”. What is now playing out on the east coast is telling us about some issues and attitudes we might expect in 2010. Verizon is not the only contract coming up for negotiations. In 2009 it will be our turn with ATT. What are the issues? What are the objectives? For the company the issue is simply one of the bottom line, how to increase profits for the shareholders. For the workers the objective is to share in those profits, to improve their lives, not to go backward as the companies would like. With the continually rising cost of health care, benefits for both employees and retirees will undoubtedly be an important bargaining issue. With a bit of work, a little phone banking and perhaps an afternoon of precinct walking for the coming election in November we will be able to remove the dreaded health care issue from bargaining…not just for now but for the next generation.
