CWA NEWS Employee Free Choice Act By Judy Perez, Executive Vice President The United States lags behind every other industrialized Democracy in the world in terms of collective bargaining coverage. The rest of the industrialized world has laws and public policies that promote collective bargaining and foster worker’s rights. We must stop the massive attack against workers who want the protections of belonging to a union. Passing the Employee Free Choice Act will level the playing field between workers and employers and will rebuild unions and the middle class. First, this act allows employees to form a union if a majority signs union authorization forms. This is how CWA organized 25,000 workers at Cingular, now ATT. Mobility. We know that most workers, if they are not threatened and intimidated by employers will choose to join a union. Union membership means better wages, benefits and job security. Next, it imposes penalties on employers if they violate the worker’s rights to join a union. Finally, it sets up a process for mediation and arbitration if the employer does not want to negotiate a first contract. In a national poll, 60 million workers said they would join a union if they could. Let’s give them that chance. Support candidates who support the Employee Free Choice Act.
