President’s Message

Micheal J. Hartigan, President, CWA Local 9400

November, 2008…

What will we be voting for?

Do you believe that greater tax breaks for the ultra rich will somehow help you?  Is the continued privatization of our governmental responsibilities, including our military, something you think will benefit you and your family?  Is the soaring national debt something that you do not think will affect you and your children?  If you believe that you and your children won’t be affected by the continuing loss of American jobs, then you know who to vote for.

On the other hand, if you are concerned about the security of pensions, believe that Corporate America should pay their fair share of the nation’s tax burden, that we should not be sending our tax dollars to a company that opens a headquarters offshore to avoid taxes and if you think that health care should be a right then you should certainly vote for the candidate who understands your needs.

Bargaining for major contracts is coming up in 2009and 2010…Health care will be an important issue, as the cost of coverage has continued to climb at a much faster rate than inflation.  This election in November will be our chance to lessen the effect of health care issues on bargaining.  Health care should be a right, as it is in every other industrialized nation, not something we have to fight for in contract after contract.  Our goal should be the eventual removal of health care as a bargaining issue.  Vote for the candidate who will take your side on this issue.

The question of who to vote for is actually fairly simple.  Which candidate will help me?  Does a candidate who promises more of the same as the last president deserve your vote?  Have the tax breaks for the super rich helped you?

You probably already have a pretty good idea about the candidate you support.  But what can you do to make sure that someone who has your interests at heart is elected?  There are many ways for members and their families to help.  Learn more about the candidates, weigh your decision of who to support carefully.  Once you decide, then volunteer to help make sure that someone who understands your needs will be the next occupant of the Whitehouse!
